The Minnesota Vikings are taking a swing on upside by bringing in former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray. Murray showed flashes with the Arizona Cardinals, but injuries and inconsistency prevented him from ever fully breaking through. Now he lands in what might be the best situation of his career — and as a Packers fan, I have to admit that’s a little concerning.

The Best Situation Murray Has Had
This is likely the most talented roster Murray has ever played with. Minnesota has an offensive-minded system that is designed to help quarterbacks succeed. We saw it with Sam Darnold already, with Minnesota being the place he really got his career going again after that 14-win season. The Vikings of course let him go to Seattle, but Minnesota was still the place where Darnold first revived his career. Now it’s Murray who will be throwing to one of the best receivers in the league in Justin Jefferson. And also Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson. The Vikings also have a solid offensive line. One that was ranked 7 by PFF heading into the 2025 season.
Kevin O’Connell Could Be the Key
Head coach Kevin O’Connell has built a reputation as one of the more quarterback-friendly play callers in the league. In addition to simply being considered one of the best coaches in the league in general. He began coaching for the Vikings in 2022, and has compiled a record of 43-25 since then. Not bad. His system emphasizes timing, spacing, and getting the ball to those solid playmakers quickly. With Murray’s incredible abilities, this could be a solid QB/coach pairing. A pairing that could maybe unlock the kind of consistency that has been missing from Murray’s career. Of course, Murray must stay healthy too.
The Talent Was Never the Question
Murray’s ability has never been in doubt. His arm strength, speed, mobility, and playmaking ability can stress defenses in ways few quarterbacks can. Which is exactly why he was a first-overall pick even with a smaller stature for NFL QB standards. I’m sure we all remember this play:
Plays like this show exactly why Murray’s upside continues to intrigue teams around the league. The question has always been whether he can put it all together over a full season.
