When a big trade like this happens in the NFL, it usually sparks one immediate debate: who won? But this might be one of those rare moves that actually makes sense for both sides. This is a trade involving two contenders operating on very different timelines.
For the Rams, we’ve seen this movie before. They are certainly no strangers to making big time moves, and it has paid off in the past for them. And I like this move for them now too. It was a good amount of draft capital to give up, but McDuffie is still only 25 years old and has played a major role in big games for the Chiefs. He was a first-team All-Pro in 2023, and second-team in 2024. And again, just 25 years old. Cornerback was also a big need for this roster. If you’re the Rams, you’re probably looking at Stafford and thinking you have two or three more years with him. So that window is closing soon. That’s why I don’t mind swinging big for an impact defender such as McDuffie. With Stafford, Nacua, Adams, and a Williams/Corum backfield, the offense is already in place. That’s why swinging big for an impact defender makes sense. The Rams, at the time of writing, are also the betting favorite to win the Super Bowl.
On the other side of the trade, the window is a little bit longer with Patrick Mahomes at Quarterback. McDuffie was entering the fifth year option of his rookie contract. Given the caliber of player he is, he will likely command a deal that could average $30 million plus per year when looking at the other top corners. So this trade helps the Chiefs avoid that looming contract. They were also over the salary cap entering the season before restructuring some salaries and making this move. This gives the Chiefs some cap flexibility moving forward. We’ve also seen this playbook from the Chiefs before. They traded top corner L’Jarius Sneed just two years ago rather than giving him a big contract. And we also saw it in 2022 when they traded Tyreek Hill instead of paying him. Beyond the money, it was also a strong haul in draft capital. The Chiefs received the No. 29 overall pick in this year’s 2026 draft, in addition to a 2026 fifth round pick, a 2026 sixth round pick, and a 2027 third round pick. They also still hold their own No. 9 overall pick. You can find some solid pieces with these picks that will come along with rookie contracts. Perhaps they target the defensive line – adding youth around Chris Jones would make sense. Or maybe a running back if someone like Jeremiyah Love is available at No. 9. We will see.
It’s a big time player on the move, but I still think it makes sense for both sides. The Rams are pushing their chips in while they still have a window, and the Chiefs are making sure theirs stays open for the long haul. It’s a deal that reflects exactly where both franchises are headed.
