March Madness is unpredictable, but a few Sweet 16 matchups in this year’s NCAA Tournament stand out more than others this round.
1 Duke vs 5 St. John’s
Two incredibly coached teams in this matchup. Two incredible defenses as well. Duke’s defense will be the best St. John’s has seen, but Pitino’s side can match that defensive intensity. St. John’s just held Darryn Peterson – possible first-overall NBA draft selection – to 5/15 shooting in their round of 32 matchup. It could spell trouble for Duke if they force Cam Boozer into an inefficient game as well.
Given their great defense, it may not be surprising to learn St. John’s is great at scoring off turnovers. And Duke just turned it over 17 times against TCU in their last game. St. John’s is also one of the hottest teams in the country, winning 21 of their last 22 since January.
Two great defensive teams make me lean St. John’s +6.5 in this matchup. Duke has more talent, but I also trust Pitino to come up with a solid game plan and have his team ready to go. Also, a great matchup to watch here is Duke’s Cam Boozer going against St. John’s PF Zuby Ejiofor. Should be a lot of battles in the paint with these two teams.
2 UConn vs 3 Michigan State
I’m staying in the East region here, where again we have two incredible coaches going at it. This is the first time these coaches will meet since November 2021. Both coaches have championship pedigrees in March. Recently though, it’s been Dan Hurley’s UConn teams dominating this tournament — even if Michigan State is absolutely capable of winning this matchup.
UConn can rebound extremely well and defend multiple positions. MSU is a very well disciplined team, as you can expect with Izzo as coach, and win with transition defense and smart shot selection. MSU doesn’t often beat themselves. If this game becomes half-court heavy though, I’m leaning UConn.
Alex Karaban of UConn has been here before, having the most experience in this tournament of any player remaining. And he has been scoring at will these first two tournament games, combining for 49 points the first two games. MSU has a pretty good player of their own in Jeremy Fears Jr. Who himself has 27(!) assists in the first two games.
UConn is currently favored by -1.5, showing how close this game is expected to be. My lean is still UConn. I wish I had some deep dive analysis to back it up, but right now I just think UConn is the more complete team roster wise. I mentioned these coaches championship pedigrees and deep runs in this tournament, but this has absolutely been Dan Hurley’s and UConn’s tournament as of late. End of the day, I just hope to see a fantastic game here.
2 Houston vs 3 Illinois
We got a battle of strengths in this one. Illinois is the tallest team in the country and has the second-most efficient offense too. Houston, on the other hand, ranks fourth defensively in the nation. Simply off that alone, you know this should be a great battle.
Houston, under Kelvin Sampson, just made their seventh straight Sweet 16. Amazing accomplishment. They do it with defense, rebounding, and physicality. Houston wants to make you uncomfortable. Illinois beats you with spacing, shot creating, and scoring bursts. Even if you get ahead on Illinois, they can erase a deficit quickly. Both teams have blown out their respective opponents so far in the first two rounds, but don’t expect a blowout here.
We also have an awesome PG matchup in this one. Illinois’ Keaton Wagler will go up against Houston’s Kingston Flemings. Both projected NBA lottery picks, and a matchup you should definitely keep an eye on.
What I keep coming back to in this game is defense travels. Jump shooting does not always. Not to mention this game is actually being played in Houston. My betting lean for this one would be Houston -3 range. The line is moving a bit, but honestly I would probably even trust Houston up to -4 here personally. I love their defense, and similar to UConn and Hurley, Houston has consistently been playing great in this tournament for years. I think we see them in the Elite 8 again this year.
