The Final Four should be about the players and the games. Instead, one of the biggest moments from the Women’s Final Four matchup between UConn and South Carolina came from the sidelines.
As the game was about to end, cameras caught UConn coach Geno Auriemma having some words for South Carolina coach Dawn Staley. This quickly became one of the most talked-about clips from the night. After the game, Auriemma pointed to officiating and a delayed pregame handshake that led to this confrontation.
In my opinion, this is just such a bad look for Geno Auriemma. Here is the clip below:

One of Auriemma’s gripes was with the officiating. UConn finished the game with 17 fouls and shot just 6 free throws, where South Carolina was called for just 8 fouls and shot 22 free throws. An obvious discrepancy, but what in the world does this have to do with Staley?
The next complaint from Auriemma was regarding how Staley talks to the officials. “I just want to make sure there’s not a double standard.” Auriemma was saying of Staley’s behavior toward the refs. He continued “I’m of the opinion that if I ever talk to an official like that, I would get tossed. So I just want to make sure there’s not a double standard, that some people are allowed to talk to officials like that and other people are not. That’s it.”
If Auriemma’s frustration was really with officiating, confronting Staley doesn’t make much sense. Did Geno want Dawn to go to the refs and say “hey guys, you aren’t calling enough fouls on our team. Make sure to call more fouls on us.” Or maybe he wanted Staley to give herself a technical for talking mean to the refs?
Auriemma also referenced a pregame handshake he waited “three minutes” for. I mean, really man? If that’s a tradition, then sure, Staley probably should have shaken his hand. But is that worth this sideline blow up that took so much focus away from the game and the South Carolina victory?
It’s really just the optics of this too. Geno lost the game, had this sideline blowup, then just walked right off after the loss. How do you not come off as just the biggest sore loser in that scenario?
Maybe this anger is from something deeper. UConn and Geno Auriemma have dominated women’s college hoops for a long time. Is he just mad that maybe his teams are not as dominant and Dawn Staley has built her own elite program over at South Carolina? The UConn dominance is absolutely being challenged by this South Carolina era. For years, every major women’s college basketball conversation would start with UConn. Now, more and more often, that conversation starts with South Carolina.
Geno Auriemma may have misdirected his anger here, as it seemed to be way more towards the refs. Or maybe part of it really is his losing control on his dominance. On a stage as big as the Final Four, moments like this stick. And fair or not, this one made Geno Auriemma look less like a frustrated competitor and more like a sore loser.
